Motocross holiday in Switzerland without packing a bike

Most visitors arrive with a suitcase rather than a motocross bike, and the MX-Academy is set up for exactly that. You can rent Honda CRF bikes in every size: the small CRF50 up to the CRF150 for children, and the CRF250 for teenagers and adults. Protective gear runs from kids' sizes to XXL: boots, gloves, helmet, goggles, knee guards and a chest protector. The only things you pack yourself are long trousers and sturdy shoes.

That keeps a motocross holiday in Switzerland simple for anyone who flies in. Expats who live here can try the sport before they buy anything, and families can bring children from the age of four. If you only want to rent a motocross bike for one day of your stay, a single course day is enough for a real first taste.

Your motocross trip to Switzerland starts at Zurich Airport

For most international guests the journey begins at Zurich Airport. From there, the MX-Academy Shop in Schlatt TG is around 39 minutes by car, measured with a route planner without traffic. From Zurich city centre it is around 42 minutes. Every course begins at the shop, where you register and collect your gear before heading out.

No hire car? Take bus line 847 to ‘Schlatt TG, Mettschlatt’; that stop is around 70 metres from the shop. If you live in the Emirates, a summer visit is worth considering: Dubai is around six hours' flight from Switzerland, so even a long weekend leaves room for a day on the bike and a day of sightseeing. The time difference is modest too: during Swiss summer time, Switzerland is two hours behind the Emirates, and in winter three hours.

How to ride motocross in Switzerland as a visitor

The training ground lies on private land, so no driving licence is needed. It is listed in the NASAK sports facilities concept of the Confederation and Swiss Olympics, and offers four tracks, one of them reserved for kids and beginners. Course days are Wednesday and Saturday, and you pick your date in the calendar of events on mx-academy.ch.

Plan six to eight hours in total, as registration, theory and gear fitting are part of the day. You arrive at the shop, register, get kitted out, follow a detailed theory session and then ride, with breaks and further tips from the coaches. Track time adds up to 3.5 hours on a Wednesday and 4 on a Saturday, breaks and instruction included. Coaching is compulsory for first-timers.

Sightseeing between your motocross days in Switzerland

Schlatt TG sits in a compact corner of the country, so short drives link the track with well-known sights. Schaffhausen and its Munot fortress are around 11 minutes away, the Rhine Falls around 16 minutes and the old town of Stein am Rhein around 17 minutes. Winterthur, home of the Swiss Science Center Technorama, is around 27 minutes away.

An easy rhythm is one riding day followed by one sightseeing day. Our guide to things to do in Switzerland lists the highlights nearby, and for the city around 42 minutes away there is a separate guide to things to do in Zurich. Heading on to the Gulf afterwards? A desert ride with MX-Academy Dubai can be arranged on a date of your choice, so one trip covers both locations.

Who joins a motocross holiday in Switzerland

Riders from 4 to 74 years old take part, from complete beginners to people who have ridden for years. Children start on a separate track, teenagers and adults on the CRF250, and anyone new to the sport rides with compulsory coaching. Couples, groups of friends and colleagues can simply book the same date together.

For you as a visitor that means one clear address in Schlatt TG and one simple routine. Arrive with long trousers, sturdy shoes and some curiosity, take your time in the theory session, and head home with your first motocross day behind you and a story to tell. Should one day not be enough, the MX-Academy motocross team in Switzerland lets you keep riding and training regularly, with a bike of any make or one hired from the academy.

A course day lasts 6–8 hours in total, including registration, gear and theory. The hours shown are the available track time including the breaks and instruction you need, not pure time in the saddle: motocross is anaerobic, breaks are part of it – and that is exactly when the coaches give you more tips and tricks. For teenagers and adults, each of these days is the recommended taster course, because it gives you a real impression of the sport and shows your progress. Kids, teenagers, women and adults all pay the same; the only difference is whether you rent or bring your own gear. With rental: a Honda bike in your size, protective gear, coaching and basic course costs. With your own gear: coaching, track hire and basic course – provided you can already ride on your own, otherwise extra coaching for €54 (CHF 50) is added.

€179 (CHF 165)1-hour taster course (track time incl. breaks and instruction) – every other Wednesday, mainly for children aged 4 to 6 who can concentrate for about an hour. Motocross taster course
