A motocross lesson on your family holiday in Dubai

If your child loves anything with wheels, a motocross lesson can be the highlight of your stay in Dubai. The MX-Academy teaches children from age 4 on small bikes, with a coach at their side and full protective gear. Experience is not required: for most children it is their very first time on a motorbike.

Plan the first lesson early in your trip, so there is time for a second session if your child wants more. A 30-minute introduction course is a good first step; group lessons for brothers, sisters or friends and private lessons follow. Group lessons last one, two or three hours, and a private package gives your child a coach of their own.

What to book from home

Send your travel dates together with your child's age and height when you enquire, so the school can plan the right bike and gear size. If two children ride, mention both, because group lessons start from two riders. You can take the complete MX package, or book flights and hotel on your own and leave only the riding to the MX-Academy.

Up to the age of 12, children pay the kids' rates, quoted per rider in AED and valid on site in Dubai. For the first try, the group introduction course of 30 minutes costs from AED 400 per child, and the price covers the small bike, kids' gear, the coach, fuel, water and the track fee.

You do not need to fly with kids' equipment. The youngest riders start on a Yamaha PW50 or one of the Torrot kids' bikes, and growing children move on to the Honda CRF70, CRF110 or CRF150. Protective gear is available in kids' sizes; if your child already has a helmet or boots that fit well, you are welcome to bring them.

Once your child rides confidently, a kids' bike can also be rented for extra laps under supervision, by the hour or as a 10-hour package. The rental price covers fuel, drinking water and the track fee.

Safety and coaching for young riders

Motocross for kids in Dubai starts at the Jebel Ali venue, which has its own beginners' track, in a relaxed atmosphere and with a coach who explains each step: sitting and standing, gentle braking and throttle, feet on the footpegs and eyes up. Lessons move at your child's pace, and small groups give every young rider personal attention.

Only intermediate riders, or riders with supervision, may ride without a coach, so for first-timers a lesson with a coach is the usual start. Some beginners manage small jumps after a day, but nobody is pushed: enjoying the ride comes first.

Fitting the riding around the rest of your trip

During the season courses run 7 days a week, so you can choose a day that suits your plans, for example between a beach day and a sightseeing tour. In the Swiss summer the difference to Dubai is two hours, in winter three, which keeps the change small for families travelling from Switzerland.

Parents can book a lesson for themselves too. For beach days, sightseeing and family outings, have a look at Dubai activities and things to do in Dubai, so the riding day fits neatly into the rest of the holiday.

If your child wants to keep riding

Some children are hooked after the first lesson. On a longer stay you can book further group lessons or a private package of up to 15 hours with one coach, and children who dream of racing can follow a long-term programme with a training plan. Families who return to Dubai can build on what their child has already learned.

If your child already rides at home, say so when you enquire and describe what they can do. The coaches then start at the right level, and your child can join a group of riders with similar experience instead of beginning again from the very first step.
